Understand Your Mental State

Mental illness in recent times has become increasingly common. About 1 in 5 adults has been reported to have a mental illness in any given year. It’s effect can be long lasting or temporary and can vary in symptoms depending on the nature of disorder and other circumstantial factors.

It is important to look out for and effectively manage mental health issues because its symptoms can affect behavioral patterns, thoughts and emotional states. Some signs and symptoms to look out for include;

Symptoms

  • Feeling sad or down
  • Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate
  • Excessive fears or worries, or extreme feelings of guilt
  • Extreme mood changes of highs and lows
  • Withdrawal from friends and activities
  • Significant tiredness, low energy or problems sleeping
  • Detachment from reality (delusions), paranoia or hallucinations
  • Inability to cope with daily problems or stress
  • Trouble understanding and relating to situations and to people
  • Problems with alcohol or drug use
  • Major changes in eating habits
  • Sex drive changes
  • Excessive anger, hostility or violence
  • Suicidal thinking

See your a mental health professional or visit your primary health care professional if you suspect or have signs and symptoms. Over a prolonged period of time, mental illnesses could cause serious issues if left untreated.
